The Triumph Stag was conceived as a stylish grand tourer combining open-top motoring with the comfort of a four-seater. Its distinctive shape was created by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, already responsible for several Triumph designs. What began as a styling exercise based on the Triumph 2000 impressed the company sufficiently to be developed into a production car, launched in 1970.

Built at Triumph's Canley factory in Coventry, the Stag was aimed at buyers wanting something more sophisticated than a traditional British sports car. Its removable roof panels, fixed central roll-over bar and elegant proportions gave it an identity quite unlike anything else in the Triumph range.

By 1973, the Stag had become one of Britain's most distinctive grand tourers, equally suited to everyday driving or a long-distance escape with the roof panels removed. Production continued until 1977, and its combination of Michelotti styling, British engineering and unmistakable 1970s character has made the Triumph Stag an enduring British classic.
